Catalogue Essay

Ahmad Zakii Anwar (b. 1955, Malaysia), also known as Zakii, is one of Malaysia’s most
established artists. He is lauded for photo-realistic paintings and portraits that capture not
only distinctive motifs and features but also the psychological dimensions and cinematic quality
of the subjects and settings. Reclining Figure 21 is a large-scale charcoal drawing of a male
nude that evokes, in two-dimensions, a visceral reality reminiscent of Michelangelo’s slave

Zakii’s preoccupation with the spiritual or metaphysical aspects of urban life is revealed
through his use of icons, symbols and allegories. Theatre, performance and masks have also
featured in his practice. Zakii’s works are steeped in contemplative silence, drawn from his
research into both Platonic simulacrums and Sufi mysticism.
